Spezzano Castle , in the municipality of Fiorano Modenese, overlooks a hill overlooking the Secchia River valley , among the hills separating Modena from Reggio Emilia. Unlike many Emilian fortresses, it was not built for purely defensive purposes: from the beginning, it was a noble residence, transformed in the 16th century by the Marquises Pio of Savoy into a center of representation, culture, and power.Sixteenth-century frescoes, the evocative Sala delle Vedute, the Ceramics Museum and experimental archaeology activities.

Frescoes, views and painted stories
Among the most evocative spaces is the Hall of Views , decorated with a unique fresco cycle: a pictorial map of the fiefdom , with castles, villages, and towers reproduced in sequence. It is a rare example of sixteenth-century mural cartography, designed to represent, more than a territory, the extent of the family's power.
Upstairs, the Battle Gallery displays war scenes painted with scenographic taste: a visual interpretation of the aristocratic vision of order and command.
The Ceramics Museum: a bridge between archaeology and industry
Since 1996, the castle has housed the Fiorano Ceramics Museum, a technological and narrative museum that tells the story of ceramic production in the Modena-Reggiano district , one of the most important in Europe. The journey begins with the Neolithic, moves through medieval techniques, and reaches the industrial development of the second half of the twentieth century, offering a glimpse into future prospects.
In the ancient cellars, a 16th-century ceramic kiln has been reconstructed using experimental archaeology techniques. Alongside artefacts, tools and tiles, the museum also houses a active laboratory, where educational and creative activities are carried out for schools and visitors.
