Sestino, located in the upper Foglia Valley, is Tuscany's easternmost municipality and boasts a thousand-year history. Originally inhabited by Etruscans, Umbrians, and Senone Gauls, it became an important Roman municipium in the 1st century BC, known as Sestinum. The National Antiquarium of Sestino houses a rich collection of archaeological finds, including dedicatory and funerary inscriptions, sculptures, and everyday objects. Of particular note are the relics related to the powerful local Volusenii family. The museum offers a glimpse into life in ancient Sestinum, highlighting the village's importance in Roman times.
Nature and local traditions
Nestled in the Apennine landscape, Sestino offers nature lovers the opportunity to explore the Sasso di Simone Nature Reserve , characterized by an enormous limestone formation and scenic trails. The Ranco Spinoso Wildlife Park is home to diverse wildlife species in a protected environment. Among the local traditions is the Chianina Steak Festival , held the last weekend of June, celebrating the area's traditional cuisine and culture.
