The Rocca di Proceno dominates the town from a spur of volcanic rock, the cornerstone of its defense system since ancient times. With its irregular structure, adapted to the terrain, and its authentic military architecture, it represents one of the few examples of medieval fortifications remaining intact in Italy. According to historical sources, the construction dates back to 997 at the behest of Pope Gregory V and restored in 1157 by Pope Adrian IV . In 1556 it was the subject of further interventions by the Municipality, under Paolo I Sforza . Some scholars hypothesize that a previous fortress was located where the archpriest's church stands today, whose bell tower, with a quadrangular structure and different from the church itself, may have been the ancient keep of the previous fortification.
The fortress was built for defensive purposes: crenellated walls, three towers (one of which is the keep ), gun slits, and a single gate, located in the most difficult-to-reach spot. Above the entrance to the courtyard, two machicolations allowed oil or pitch to be thrown on attackers. A rainwater cistern is located on the first floor of the keep.
Structural integrity and drawbridge
The Rocca di Proceno is one of the very few in Italy to have retained its original structure intact, without any expansions or modifications. The original drawbridge , unique in its kind, is still preserved in the main tower and is in perfect working order.
Recovery and valorization
After the Second World War, the complex was restored under the direction of the The Civil Engineering Department and the Superintendency have brought the building's authenticity to light. Today, the fortress is privately owned and part of the Network of Historic Homes of Lazio , accessible on certain public occasions or by reservation.
Many generations have succeeded one another, always passionately respecting both its roots and its extraordinary history. Today, this knowledge and passion, passed down through the family, constitutes a truly unique and unrepeatable legacy of memories, atmospheres, places, and people.
Inside the fortress' keep there is a small museum , which can be visited upon reservation.
The complex is part of a hotel spread across a period residence under the definition of Castello di Proceno.
