A place that welcomes, yesterday as today Beneath Piazza Mazzini , a short walk from Modena 's historic center, lies a space that for decades remained invisible to passersby. It is the former Albergo Diurno , reopened after thirty years with a new public function, but with respect for its architectural and social value. Built in 1933 as a reception area for travelers and residents, it was constructed entirely underground , occupying the entire surface beneath the sidewalk. This was a deliberate design choice: to ensure functionality without altering the visual balance of the square, preserving the greenery and harmony of the public spaces.

From service space to place of relationship
In the 1930s, day hotels were modern and convenient facilities, designed to offer restrooms, showers, barbers, and assistance to passing travelers. The one in Modena was located in a central, lively square, a fitting choice for a place dedicated to hospitality and socializing .
Today, the same space has changed face, but retains its original spirit: the Ex Albergo Diurno has been returned to the city as a Welcome Room , a multifunctional space open to the public, where information, memory and new cultural experiences meet.
A new way of telling the city
The reopening of the former Albergo Diurno represents a virtuous example of urban regeneration: not a simple restoration, but a smart transformation that respects the site's history and makes it a vibrant part of the city once again. A gateway that welcomes those arriving in Modena and restores value to a place that had been silent for years.
