Ghirlandina Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: civic history, local traditions, and urban panoramas The Ghirlandina, together with the The Duomo and Piazza Grande are part of the UNESCO complex that has represented the historic heart of Modena for over twenty years. An undisputed symbol of the city, the tower was more than just a bell tower, but a constant presence in the lives of Modena's residents: its bells marked the time, signaled the opening of the city gates , and summoned the population in times of danger. The affectionate name by which it is known – “la Ghirlandina” – comes from the marble balustrades that surround the spire, “ graceful as garlands ”, as someone defined them centuries ago.

An interior that tells of power and identity
In addition to its religious function, the tower also had a civil role. Inside was the so-called "Sacristy of the Municipality" , where public documents, treasure chests, and symbolic objects were kept. Among these, the famous "Stolen Bucket" , protagonist of the historic rivalry between Modena and Bologna, during the Battle of Zappolino in 1325 .
