Lucanian Dolomites - Accettura
Accettura is a small town located at about 770 meters above sea level, in the green heart of Basilicata. To reach it, you pass through pristine landscapes, dominated by the dense forests of Gallipoli Cognato and Montepiano, where nature remains wild and silent. The village is located within the Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park , a protected area characterised by forests, rock formations and rich biodiversity.
Walking among churches and palaces
The historic center is a labyrinth of stone alleys , huddled houses and small squares that tell the story of centuries of life.
Walking you come across eighteenth-century noble palaces , ancient peasant dwellings and above all them: the churches.
Every building preserves something:
the Church of the Annunziata with its layers of frescoes that have emerged over time,
the Mother Church of San Nicola , with a crucifix from 1492,
and the Church of Sant'Antonio , which was once part of a Franciscan convent.
May: when trees tell stories
Every year, at Pentecost, Accettura is transformed. Two trees—a Turkey oak and a holly —are chosen from the woods, dragged for miles, brought to the town, joined, raised, and scaled.
It is the Maggio di San Giuliano, a celebration with roots in pagan rites and which today blends spirituality, ancient gestures, and community.
