Monterano Channel
Canale Monterano was founded in the late 16th century by Tuscan and Umbrian settlers called to clear and cultivate new lands, along with the inhabitants of ancient Monterano who were seeking a healthier place. The first homes were simple huts, later replaced by masonry buildings that developed around what is now Corso della Repubblica. With the unification of Italy, the Municipality of Canale Monterano was born, combining the main town and the historic hamlet of Montevirginio . Montevirginio arose during the same period, when Duke Virginio Orsini assigned new lands to settlers to create a village organized around the current Piazza Sant'Egidio. Among the most beloved traditions are the Corsa del Bigonzo at the end of August and the Riarto dei Butteri , which celebrates the figure of the Maremma buttero (a cowboy). The area is also known for its typical products—cheeses, honey, oil, and especially the famous Canale bread , which has earned the village a place in the network of Bread Cities .
