Civitavecchia
Civitavecchia, founded as an imperial port by order of Trajan in the early 2nd century AD, is today one of the most important cruise ports in the Mediterranean. Famous for what Stendhal called " the most beautiful sea in the world ," the city welcomes visitors with its monumental historic port , dominated by the imposing Renaissance fortress, and a lively waterfront filled with restaurants and shops. Strolling between the sea and monuments allows you to discover a place where modernity coexists with millennia-old traces of Roman and Renaissance history. A must-see is the National Archaeological Museum , which houses the only small-scale copy of the famous Colossus of Rhodes , depicted in the form of Apollo-Helios. Among the places of worship, the Sanctuary of Sant'Agostino stands out, housing the statue of the Virgin of Medjugorje , linked according to popular tradition to the miracle of the tears of blood of 1995. The historic center invites slow discovery: the medieval fountain in Piazza Leandra, the arch of Via Traiana, the turret of Piazza Saffi, the Vanvitelli Fountain , the elegant Porta Livorno , and the evocative neighborhood of Piazza Fratti, which arose in the 17th century as a ghetto. What to see in the city
Among the most iconic sites are the Terme Taurine , one of the most important Roman thermal complexes in southern Etruria, and the Aquae Tauri area, adjacent to the famous Ficoncella thermal waters , still appreciated today for their beneficial properties. Nature lovers cannot miss the coastal site of Frasca , recognized as a Natural Monument by the Lazio Region.
