Castle in the Santa Severa district
Santa Marinella, overlooking the Lazio coast in the province of Rome, is a seaside resort known for its beaches, cliffs, and characteristic seaside historic center. Its current name derives from the image of the Saint once kept in a private chapel of the Odescalchi family, while in Roman times the area was known as Castrum Novum . The area preserves evidence dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, up to the development, from the 9th century BC onwards, of important coastal settlements such as Punicum , the Phoenician port of Pyrgi (now Santa Severa), and the Roman Castrum Novum itself. Santa Severa is the only hamlet of Santa Marinella and one of the most iconic towns on the Lazio coast. The village develops around the majestic Santa Severa Castle , overlooking the sea and considered one of the most evocative monumental complexes in the region. Next to the castle is the ancient site of Pyrgi , with its significant archaeological heritage, and long beaches that make the town perfect for both bathing and nature and cultural itineraries. A place that combines millennia of history, coastal beauty, and a unique Mediterranean atmosphere. Santa Severa – Sea, archaeology, and the castle on the sea
