Walk through ancient Tarquinia, among Etruscan temples, walls, and one of the most beautiful landscapes in Lazio.
“On foot through history: the Ara della Regina in Ancient Tarquinia” is an easy trekking route , also suitable for families with children, to get to know the world of ancient Tarquinia up close, between archaeology and landscape. The trail takes place in the Pian di Civita area, a hill from which the medieval city of Tarquinia can be seen in the distance. The great Etruscan temple of the Ara della Regina once stood here, one of the most important sacred complexes in the area, dedicated to ceremonies and rites. Today, the massive base in macco, a typical limestone found throughout Etruria, is visible, giving a sense of the monumental scale of the building (4th century BC). The itinerary continues towards Porta Romanelli , the northern entrance to the Etruscan city, which connected Tarquinia to the hinterland. At this point, you can observe the layout of the ancient walls , built using the "frame" technique, in which stone blocks and load-bearing pillars create a structure of great solidity and visual impact. Walking through fields, hills and archaeological remains, the route offers a simple but engaging educational experience , ideal for approaching the vast archaeological heritage of Lazio and for experiencing the Tarquinia area not only through the painted tombs, but also through the places of the city of the living. Porta Romanelli is immersed in one of the region's most evocative landscapes: here, nature, Etruscan history, and medieval memories intertwine in a single vision.
